UN Water Conference 2023
The UN 2023 Water Conference is expected to adopt the Water Action Agenda as a main outcome representing voluntary commitments of countries and stakeholders to meet global water-related goals and targets.
The Conference – the first in almost 50 years – is convened by the UN General Assembly. The Kingdom of the Netherlands and the Republic of Tajikistan, co-hosts of the Conference, are committed to making the Conference a watershed moment that will bring stakeholders from all sectors together and that will create global momentum for accelerated implementation and improved impact to advance the broad challenges surrounding water.
The five themes of the conference, that support the SDG6 Global Acceleration Framework, are:
- Water for Health: Access to safe drinking water, hygiene, and sanitation.
- Water for Development: Valuing Water, Water-Energy-Food Nexus and Sustainable Economic and Urban Development.
- Water for Climate, Resilience, and Environment: Source to Sea, Biodiversity, Climate, Resilience and Disaster Risk Reduction.
- Water for Cooperation: Transboundary and International Water Cooperation, Cross-Sectoral Cooperation and Water Across the 2030 Agenda.
- Water Action Decade: Accelerating the implementation of the objectives of the Decade, including through the UN Secretary-General’s Action Plan.
One of the main outcomes will be a Water Action Agenda filled with game-changing commitments from governments, civil society, and the private sector that will truly accelerate our progress toward water-related goals and targets.
Over the course of the Conference itself, there will be an opening and a closing ceremony, six plenary meetings and five interactive dialogues touching on the five themes. There will also be four special events.
